Going to Cabo St Lucas is often the trip of a lifetime. It’s a stunning location with so much to offer. However, we hear more and more about sustainability and protecting the environment around us. With coastal areas like this one, it has become absolutely vital to understand how you can keep it green and protect the location. Think of the beauty and the nature in Cabo. It’s our job as residents, tourists, or even dreamers to help take care of the land. After all, we want to be able to enjoy it for many years to come, right?
As you’re planning your trip, use these tips to help you come up with ways to keep it green. While you can’t control everything, every little bit helps!
Single-Use Plastics
One major initiative that has just recently been put into place is a ban on single-use plastics. This ban became effective in 2019, and many people are still adjusting. Come prepared to comply with these rules, but also make sure you’re supporting the initiative. Single-use plastics are one of the biggest problems that ecosystems like Cabo face.
What are single-use plastics? Here are a few examples:
- plastic bags
- plastic straws
- styrofoam containers
- plastic cups or bottles
Any type of disposable plastic that is meant to be thrown away after one use is no longer allowed. This means hotels, tourists, and locals all need to be aware and take the steps to avoid these products. Instead, most of Cabo has turned to using compostable or biodegradable substitutes to contribute to conservation efforts.
As you plan your trip, be sure to avoid those plastics that just end up in the water or on the streets. Don’t bring any plastics like these, and be sure to do your best to avoid using them.
Blue Flag Beaches
You can take steps to be aware of and supportive of initiatives within Cabo. Many beaches have gone the extra mile to maintain their cleanliness and avoid waste. Beaches are popular, and what happens there affects the marine life in the area. Support the Blue Flag beaches that have taken steps to be certified by ensuring they are preserving the beaches as well as the marine life and wildlife.
While you’re on the beach, be sure to follow the cleaning regimens and don’t leave waste behind. Clean up after yourself. Use sunscreen that isn’t harmful and remember to avoid those plastics, too. You will find that there are more than two dozen beaches to choose from in the area that have been certified as Blue Flag beaches.
The beaches work very hard to earn this certification. It’s all in an effort to protect the land, the nature around, and the animals that rely on this area to survive.
Green Globe Certification Properties

All properties in the area have to conform to the ban on single-use plastics. However, properties can also choose other ways to take their sustainability to the next level. A Green Globe certification is one way to do that. If you’re looking to support those who support sustainable practices through obvious actions, do some research and find a place to stay that holds this certification.
The Green Globe certification is only given to properties that take specialized steps to earn it. These properties must consistently prove that they are exceptional in their steps toward ecological and environmental protection. They certainly have guidelines from the certification, but they may also take initiatives of their own that fit the bill.
Fresh Dining Experiences in Cabo St Lucas
You won’t necessarily eat at a location that offers a “farm to table” experience for every meal in Cabo. But you can certainly make a point of supporting some of these locations while you are there. You will find many local restaurants and food vendors try to utilize local resources for their menus.
That doesn’t just refer to the seafood on the table. It refers also to other locally sourced products, as well as organic ingredients. Not only does this support the economic initiative and sustainability, but it’s giving back to local farms, fishermen, and other sources as well.
Check out restaurants that use fresh and local products, as well as orchards or farms in the areas that provide much of the organic materials.
Local Cabo St Lucas Conservation Initiatives
While you’re in Cabo, you can seek out some of the local conservation groups. You can also choose to support these groups from afar if you’d prefer that. There are several well-known sustainability and conservation projects to be aware of.
Tortugueros Las Playitas
This sea turtle conservation program is one of many in the nearby areas. As you know, many sea turtles find their home in Cabo and make nests along the beaches and shorelines. Sea turtles continue to be endangered and this is one of the biggest initiatives across the world. Programs like this one focus on habitat preservation in order to protect the nests and the hatchlings. There are other programs that practice similar things or focus on other aspects of sea turtle conservation as well.
Raben Mexico
The whales are another huge part of Cabo, and this group focuses on whale rescue. They first started in 2004 and have spent their time working to rescue whales in need. They have a protocol in place and have been able to help at more than 120 incidents through the years. They have more than 180 team members who focus on whale protection and rescuing practices.
Cabo Pulmo
Cabo Pulmo is a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been labeled the “aquarium of the world.” It’s a huge reef system location along the east coast of the Baja peninsula and the largest reef system in North America. They provide sustainable tours and snorkeling opportunities to give guests a closer look at the reef and species. The entire goal is conservation, and supporting them gives back to those efforts.
