Read on to learn more about the history of Cabo San Lucas and 3 things you must see while you are here.

History

Cabo San Lucas is a city located on the Baja California Peninsula. It is believed to have been inhabited since 13,000 BCE, first by the Pericú people. They were hunters and gathers and were alone in the Cabo area until 1534. This was when a Spanish ship arrived in the Bay of La Paz, captained by Hernán Cortés. The first permanent settlement on the Baja Peninsula did not come until 1697. In the 1700s, Spain sent over Jesuit missionaries to settle in Los Cabos. In the 1840s, the Mexican American War was taking place. America ended up conceding Baja California to Mexico.

Slowly but surely, Cabo San Lucas became known as a wonderful fishing spot. It also became a tourist destination. American celebrities, including Bing Crosby and Lucille Ball, began to flock to Cabo because it was such a secluded destination. Today, Cabo has become a popular tourist destination for all different types of people, beyond attracting celebrities. The area now includes many resorts, golf courses, and tours that vacationers can enjoy during their Cabo vacations. While on your Cabo vacation, take a moment to let the rich history of the area soak in and think about the occupants of Cabo all the way back in 13,000 BCE.

Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas: See the Arch!

The Arch of Cabo San Lucas is a famous tourist destination and a “must-see” during your Cabo vacation. This rock formation is located at the southernmost tip of Cabo, where the Pacific Ocean becomes the Gulf of California. The rocks that make up the Arch are stunning. In fact, the formation is 3 stories high! This is a great place to spot a sea lion or a whale! At Cabo Discount Tours, we offer beautiful sunset cruises that will take you right by the Arch.

Looking for a relaxing, romantic evening? The Tropicat cruise takes tourists out to the Arch at sunset on a 65-foot Catamaran. Enjoy wine, deli meats, cheese, and fruit and veggie platters, all while listening to beautiful jazz music.

Interested in having dinner out at sea? We offer a SunRider dinner cruise aboard our 100-foot double-decker Catamaran. We will sail out to the Arch, where you can hopefully spot a humpback or gray whale. These whales are in the Cabo waters from November through May, so if you are visiting during that timeframe, you won’t want to miss this cruise! The SunRider will have an open bar and will serve a delicious Mexican dinner.

Cruising with kids? Come experience our pirate-themed sunset cruise. In addition to stopping at the Arch for a photo op, the adventure will include an open bar, a BBQ or fajita dinner, pirate stories, dancing, and storm chanting. Your kids will have a blast pretending to be pirates for the night! The cruises are a wonderful way to see the Arch up close. You will be able to take amazing pictures, as well as potentially spot a whale or sea lion.
